Subsequently, with the arrival of the 20th century, the region experienced a gradual abandonment by farmers, allowing nature to begin its recovery and reclaim its space. The importance of environmental preservation gained significant attention, and in 2005, the park opened its doors, primarily established to protect the unique wildlife, flora, and natural landscapes of the region. Today, the park is a protected area included in the Special Protected Area of Pico da Vara and Ribeira do Guilherme, which continues to keep the cultural history and traditions of the local community alive. It is also a significant tourist attraction on the island that draws visitors from around the world who are captivated by the various natural landscapes.

A visit to the park

A visit to Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park typically takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the time spent on the trails and in the craft shops selling unique, traditional regional items located in the old miller's houses at the entrance. If you're visiting the park during the high season (between June and September), it's advisable to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Additionally, the parking lot located near the park's entrance is relatively small considering the number of tourists the park receives.

Upon arriving at the parking lot, you can see, on the other side of the road, the largest and most famous waterfall known as the 'Véu da Noiva' (Bride's Veil). This is unquestionably the park's main attraction, and there's a short trail around it where you can capture some amazing photographs. Once you enter the park area itself, you'll find various trails that pass by numerous waterfalls, small ponds, and meander along the stream that winds through the lush landscape, providing an incredible sense of tranquility. The park's trails are ideal for hikes and family outings.

On the right side of the park's entrance, you'll find several water mills that have been converted into the facilities of the Ethnographic Museum, as well as some craft shops. There's even one mill that is still operational, allowing visitors to observe the entire process of corn milling. Inside one of these mills, you'll also find a small café where traditional sweets like "malassadas," a typical Azorean dessert similar to Portuguese Christmas "filhós," are often served.

  • Comfortable footwear is recommended as there is a fair amount of walking to be done within the park.
  • Pay close attention to the ground, as the water flowing near the trail can make it wet and, consequently, quite slippery.
